What is Pilates?

Pilates is a safe, effective workout to stretch and strengthen your body. It will leave you looking toned, revitalized, and moving with ease. Pilates transforms the way you feel, look, and perform, regardless of your age or condition.

Since the early 20th century, Pilates has been used for rehabilitative purposes for those with medical issues that limit exercise. Men and women with arthritis, fibromyalgia, back problems, and sports injuries can all benefit and improve from Pilates. As a fitness program, Pilates exercises retrains dysfunctional movement patterns while simultaneously correcting biomechanical faults. It also helps to improve spinal alignment, stretch tight hamstrings and hip flexors, and strengthen smaller stabilizing muscles that improve posture. Pilates is used to develop muscle strength, relieve pressure on joints, and stop the debilitating effects of your body overcompensating for poorly functioning muscles.

Pilates program options are truly endless, with more than 500 exercises using the mat and specialty equipment, such as the reformer, chair, and barrel and tower system. This range of options allows you to sit, kneel, recline, or stand while exercising. The exercises can even be modified to meet the needs of any individual.

Pilates is also a perfect complement to cardiovascular exercise and should be incorporated into your fitness routine several times each week. Because Pilates is beneficial for people of all ages, skills, fitness levels, and abilities, it’s the perfect exercise to sustain throughout your lifetime.
